Master in Assessment in Health Professions Education

John Norcini, PhD is President Emeritus of the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER®), Research Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Upstate Medical University, Affiliate Professor at the University of Minho, and a Fellow of Presence (a Center at Stanford Medical School).  Prior to FAIMER, Dr. Norcini held several positions at the American Board of Internal Medicine. He has more than 200 publications, lectured and taught in more than 45 countries, and is on the editorial boards of several peer-reviewed journals. He is an honorary Fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners (UK) and the Academy of Medical Educators and has received numerous awards including the Karolinska Prize for Research in Medical Education and the Hubbard Award.

M. Brownell Anderson (Brownie) served as Vice President, International Programs at the National Board of Medical Examiners, USA for a decade. In this capacity, she worked with medical school faculty around the world to better align curriculum outcomes with student assessments and with organizations to improve certification of healthcare professionals and foster a “culture of assessment” internationally. Prior to joining the NBME, Brownie worked for 27 years at the Association of American Medical Colleges where she served as the Senior Director for Educational Programs. In that role she was responsible for working with the curriculum and evaluation programs of the medical student education programs at all medical schools in the United States. Brownie was on the faculty of the Arabian Gulf University for several years and has worked with the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER). She has published numerous articles on medical education and spoken and taught in many countries and at many national and international conferences.

Nuno Sousa (MD, PhD) is Full Professor and President of the School of Medicine, University of Minho. Nuno Sousa, together with a small group of other leaders, was able to create this highly respect medical school, one of the most well-known and respected internationally, from scratch after he moved from U. Porto to U. Minho in 2001. Nuno Sousa serves at several medical education and medical assessment advisory boards (NBME, EuroBMA). He is Visiting Professor at Upstate Medical University, NY.

Manuel João Costa is Associate Professor at the School of Medicine and Pro-Rector for Educational Innovation and Student Affairs at the University of Minho. Having earned his Biochemistry Degree and PhD in Biomedical Sciences, his primary research areas are medical education and biochemistry and molecular biology education. He is member of the faculty development committee of the Association for Medical Education in Europe and of the education committee of the Federation fo the European Biochemical Societies. He has served as associate editor for international journals, including PLOS One and BMC Medical Education and is editorial board member of the journal Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education. Fernando Rodrigues is an Associate Professor with habilitation at University of Minho, Braga Portugal and Director of the PhD Program in Health Sciences. His major interests are on virulence factors of fungal pathogens characterization and on the development of post-graduation programs.

João Cerqueira is Associate Professor of Neurology at the School of Medicine, University of Minho (Braga, Portugal) and serves as associate dean for undergraduate medical education, overseeing the design, implementation and monitoring of the curriculum at the school. In this role he coordinated in the last 4 years the design and implementation of a major curricular transformation. The newly implemented MinhoMD includes significant opportunities for electives and interprofessional skills development, also acknowledging the relevance of excellent reasoning skills, the humanities and technology applied to medicine.

José Miguel Pêgo is an Anesthesiologist and an Associate Professor at the School of Medicine, Braga, Portugal. He is also part of the Population Heath Research Domain at Life and Health Sciences Research Institute, Braga, Portugal. He teaches Pharmacology, Anesthesiology, Critical Care. He is the Vice Dean for Education managing pre- and post-graduation affaris. He is mainly interested in the effects of chronic stress in emotional behavior and understanding the underlying mechanisms. He is also interested in the cognitive skills assessment process. He is certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners in the Foundations of Assessment in Medical Education (FAME) course and a member of the European Board of Medical Assessors. 
He is the founder and CEO of iCognitus, a spin-off company that specializes in written assessment software (QuizOne).

Vitor Hugo Pereira is a cardiologist and an Assistant Professor at the School of Medicine, University  of Minho. He is a FAIMER Fellow 2019, during which he developed a project on the implementation of Bedside Ultrasound on undergraduate curriculum. He is currently the coordinator of the Post-Graduate and Medical Education Unit and of the Clinical Skills Laboratory of the School of Medicine. His interested in Health Professions Education include assessment of clinical performance, curricular development and simulation. 

Marco worked for 20 years as an internal medicine specialist and clinical teacher at Internal Medicine wards, Intensive Care Units and Emergency Departments. His first academic position was as Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine at the State University of Campinas in Brazil. In 2017, Marco became a senior researcher in Medical Education, faculty and educational developer at the University Medical Centre Groningen, in the Netherlands. In 2020, Marco started a new position as Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Minho and since 2021 he has been an associate professor of innovation and research in education at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Utrecht. Marco is passionate about medical education in general and active methodologies in particular. This passion led Marco to a career change in the last 15 years, when Marco focused on the design of innovative approaches to online learning, simulation, and assessment. Marco believes in the importance of building a trust relationship with students, based on the concept of Educational Alliance, and searches for mastering the rules of engagement with the new generation of Millennial students. Marco`s motto is: “Engagement also drives learning!”. Marco is active on faculty development specially on using online tools to foster communities of practice of innovative teachers. His research interests are focused on professional identity development, arts in medical education, and clinical reasoning.
